The Poser To Max Remedy

Mesh Foot is a 3DS Max plugin that allows you to seamlessly integrate exported .3DS or .OBJ mesh sequences into existing scenes without re-animating, re-boning, or re-skinning anything.

This unique concept allows you to treat an imported mesh sequence as if it were video footage, simplifying the integration of Poser mesh exports into 3DS Max. Each Mesh Foot object has it's own Out-Of-Range Setting, Scale and Time Stretch updating within the scene as you scrub the timeline.

The Mesh Foot Helper Rollout

After the Mesh Foot Parent has been created, the Create, Pick, Replicate and Render buttons are enabled.

To import a .3DS or .OBJ mesh sequence click the Create button. This will bring up a system browse dialog where you can locate a mesh sequence.

When a .3DS mesh is loaded, it is automatically optimized for the viewport. It inherits the settings from the Mesh Foot Parent. If you want your mesh to use settings other than the default, it is important that you set the Optimize Parameters before you click the Create button. OBJ sequences are not automatically Optimized.

To replicate an existing Mesh Foot Locator click the Pick button to select the locator for replication then click the Replicate button to make copies of the source. Count is the number of new copies generated. Each new replicant strives to have a Frame Offset that is entirely different from the source. The Variance parameter is used to determine how different in scale and time multiplier the new replicants are from their original source.

Use Auto Update is enabled by default. This means that each time you move the time slider, Mesh Foot will load all the appropriate meshes in the scene for that frame. If you wish to defeat this functionality simply turn the checkbox off. NOTE: This must be on for rendering to occur.

Mesh Foot renders a .PNG file sequence over the current animation range to the 'Images' folder. Specify the Output Name before you click Render. All other settings are inherited from the standard render dialog.

Before Parent Create

Browse to the mesh folder and select the first file in the sequence.

The Mesh Foot Helper Rollout

Mesh Foot creates a locator for the mesh sequence. The locator is the manager of the imported mesh. The locator is used to position and animate the mesh within the scene. The managed mesh is updated when the time changes. You can also attach the locator to the surface of objects, make it follow a path or other typical 3DS Max tasks.

Creating The Mesh Foot Parent

When you click the Render button you may see several messages appear.

Mesh Foot will not render unless the Auto Update check box of the Mesh Foot Parent is enabled.

When you click the Render button Mesh Foot creates a new folder in the Images folder of the 3DS Max root. This new folder is named whatever text is in the Output Name field. Mesh Foot will not render into the default name, you must type a new name before you click Render.

After you click the Render button, a confirm dialog will popup reminding you that you are going to render the currently active viewport. If the currently active viewport is the one you wish to render, click Yes.

Once a render is running, you can always cancel it by pressing the ESC key or clicking the Cancel button.
